Admission to the Information Engineering study program

Admission requirements for the Bachelor’s degree program

You are entitled to embark on the Bachelor’s degree program if you have the general or subject-related qualification for university entrance. There are no admission limitations; there is no numerus clausus (NC) or other selection procedures.
The six-term study program for the Bachelor of Information Engineering (B.Sc) always starts in the winter term on 15 October.

Admission requirements for the Master’s degree program

You are entitled to embark on a Master’s degree program in you have a first degree from a university,  university of applied sciences or university of cooperative education (Berufsakademie) (B.Sc./M.Sc./Dipl.) in Information Engineering, Computer Science or other corresponding study program. For graduates in other subjects it is possible to take an admission examination set by the department.

The four-term study program for the Master of Information Engineering (M.Sc.) can be started in either the winter or summer term.

It is possible for people to start a Master’s degree program in Information Engineering who do not have a Bachelor’s degree in Information Engineering or other related subject.

Admission examination

Students who wish to take this course of admission have to prove knowledge that is acquired during the basic study period of the Bachelor study program in Information Engineering. This knowledge is tested individually before admission in the context of the above-mentioned admission examination. The individual constituents of the admission examination can also be taken by guest students.
The admission examination constitutes three modules on the following examination areas on the subject of Information Engineering at the University of Konstanz:
a) Basics of computer science,
b) System computer science,
c) Applied computer science,
d) Information science.
Detailed information of the content of this module can be found in the annex of the admission regulations.

The StPA-IE determines which of the above-mentioned modules candidates are examined in the admission examination in the form of an individual examination. Above all prior knowledge from the previous study program is taken into account and the examination tests how far existing knowledge is comparable with the above-mentioned module content. To demonstrate the comparability, candidates are required to include precise descriptions of the content of teaching from their prior study program in their application. The modules to be tested in the individual examination are determined individually for each candidate. A maximum of three of the four modules are tested.

The Master’s study program includes a part whereby students attend lectures at other departments to find out the requirements other disciplines have of Information Engineering. Students who study Information Engineering based on a degree in another subject, do not have to attend lectures from other departments; instead they participate in other in-depth courses from the Master’s degree study program. Further information can be found in the examination regulations (PDF file is only available in German).

Graduates from the Bachelor’s study program in Information Engineering at the University of Konstanz and graduates with comparable degrees are exempt from the admission examination. Comparability with other degrees is audited by the StPA-IE within the framework of the admission procedure.

The precise wording of the admission regulations can be reviewed in this PDF file (only available in German).
