Abstract
In this presentation, I will provide an overview of my research activities in the field of smart infomation systems, ie., systems that support users in acessing and processing large amounts of data and information. As I will illustrate, I have approached this field from different angles, often in the context of multinational and interdisciplinary research projects. Distinguishing between personalised information access, computational intelligence, and data science, I will briefly highlight several example projects that I have worked on over the years and summarise my main contributions to the field. I will conclude the presentation by outlining one representative project more in detail. This project, NewsREEL, was a successful collaboration with a local SME and led to two innovative research contributions. First of all, it was the first instance of a 'living lab for the evaluation of information access systems' in which researchers gained access to a company's resources and user base. Moreover, it allowed further research on stream-based recommendation in real-ltime.
