Study and Work - steps to consider

1)  Before coming to Konstanz

  • Choose a study plan (see below) you want to follow during your study period at the University of Konstanz and consider the information on module selection at our department - be prepared to face changes in your learning agreement.
  • Contact your departmental Erasmus coordinator at the University of Essex to discuss the requirements for the internship period (e.g. final report)
  • Make sure you have understood how the Erasmus Placement programme works in the UK to apply for extra funding.

2) During your study period at the University of Konstanz

  • December: consult our Erasmus coordinator to plan the internship period and to discuss your internship preferences and the required application documents.
  • January: Apply for an internship supported by our department; sign the traineeship agreement, apply for Erasmus funding.

3) During your internship period

  • March: start your internship period
  • July: write the final internship report and submit the report to your departmental Erasmus coordinator from the University of Essex and to our Erasmus coordinator.

Regarding module selection

You are requested to follow one of these study plans listed below and select a more or less fixed catalogue of courses during your study exchange period here in Konstanz.

Please note, the study structure and along with that the way courses are available for each term differ from your home university. Please read carefully the provided information on course selection for exchange students to become acquainted with the new system.

Erasmus placement period

In the second semester, students will either do an industrial internship in a local company or a research internship at our department.

Research or traineeship agreement

The legal and operative base for your internship is a research or traineeship agreement between you, the University of Konstanz and the company. The traineeship agreement covers the terms and conditions just as salary, working hours and working areas of responsibility.

ECTS on your transcript

Your internship period will be noted as "practical semester" with 30 ECTS in your transcript of records. 1 ECTS credit reflects 30 hours of average workload.

Students are usually expected to write a final report in the end. However, your departmental Erasmus coordinator at the University of Essex will discuss with you additional requirements and conditions.

Five-month internship

The internship period usually starts in March until July.

Salary and living expenses

The salary can vary from unpaid up to 1500 Euros depending on the company.

Even if the internship should be unpaid, costs for living and the apartment rent are still cheaper compared to the UK.

Students from the University of Essex are enrolled at the University of Konstanz during both exchange semesters and benefit on the one hand from a guaranteed place in a student hostel and on the other hand from the student status (student discount).
