Bachelor of Science Computer Science

The Bachelor’s Programme in Computer Science focuses on all aspects along the data – information – knowledge process chain. It combines theoretical and practical aspects of computer science with user-oriented methods of information science. The focus is especially on methods and systems used to visualise, analyse, explore and process large information spaces.

Our students learn to apply methods and approaches of computer and information science and to manage projects. The programme teaches subject-specific skills including formal, algorithmic and mathematical skills, competencies in analysis, design, realisation and project management, technological competencies as well as interdisciplinary skills and key qualifications. As a graduate of this applied computer science programme, you will be qualified to work for a variety of companies and organisations, both at the national and international levels.

The standard period of study for this bachelor’s programme is six semesters, including four semesters of basic studies and two semesters of advanced studies. During your basic studies, you will be required to take a number of mandatory modules with a student workload of 120 ECTS credits, including:

• principles of computer science and programming,
• computer systems and networks,
• database and information systems,
• algorithms and data structures,
• software engineering and software projects,
• theoretical computer science,
• data analysis and visualization,
• computer graphics and interactive systems,
• mathematical foundations of computer science,
• discrete structures,
• statistics or numerical analysis,
• as well as courses from other departments and key qualifications.

During your advanced studies (fifth and sixth semester), you will take modules worth 60 ECTS credits, choosing your advanced courses, seminars and one project from the different areas of specialisation offered by the department. You can also enrol in courses offered by other departments and earn a number of key qualifications. The bachelor's project in the fifth semester is designed to prepare you for your bachelor's thesis (three months), which you will complete in your sixth and final semester. Your overall grade is calculated from the examination results you achieved over the course of your studies, your bachelor's thesis and an oral thesis examination.
